Duquesne Brewing of Pittsburgh

is one of the most historically significant names in Pittsburgh’s brewing tradition. The original Duquesne Brewing Company was established in 1899 and became a major regional brewer, producing popular beers for generations of Western Pennsylvania drinkers. Following a merger into the Independent Brewing Company, the Duquesne name returned after Prohibition and eventually became one of the country’s ten largest brewing brands during the 1940s. The historic brewery continued operating until 1972.

Duquesne produced a wide range of beers throughout its history, including Duquesne Pilsner, Silver Top Lager, Duke Ale, Old Nut Brown Ale, Duquesne Bock, Bavarian Beer, and Buccaneer Beer. Its distinctive South Side brewery complex became a recognizable Pittsburgh landmark, particularly for its famous clock tower. The historic brewery building remains standing today, preserving an important part of the city’s industrial and brewing heritage.

The Duquesne beer brand was revived in 2008, bringing the iconic Pittsburgh name back to Western Pennsylvania. For beer enthusiasts interested in local brewing history, Duquesne Brewing of Pittsburgh represents a fascinating connection between Pittsburgh’s historic brewing industry and its modern craft-beer culture.

With its long history, recognizable beer brands, historic brewery complex, and enduring local identity, Duquesne remains an important name in Pennsylvania’s brewing heritage.
