Optimism Brewing Company
Founded in 2013 by husband-and-wife team Gay Gilmore and Troy Hakala, Optimism Brewing Company became one of Seattle’s most innovative and community-focused craft breweries. The brewery officially opened its Capitol Hill flagship location in 2015 and quickly gained recognition for doing things differently. Rather than building its identity around exclusivity or beer trends, Optimism focused on creating an inclusive gathering space where everyone felt welcome. This vision helped transform the brewery into one of Seattle’s most beloved social destinations.
Located in the heart of Capitol Hill, Optimism was famous for operating one of the largest brewery taprooms in Washington State. The expansive beer hall featured communal seating, an open and welcoming atmosphere, rotating food trucks, family-friendly policies, and frequent community events. The brewery became a popular meeting place for locals, visitors, nonprofit organizations, and social groups looking for a comfortable space to gather.
Optimism’s brewing philosophy emphasized approachable, well-balanced beers rather than highly experimental styles. The brewery produced a diverse range of lagers, pale ales, IPAs, stouts, and seasonal releases, often using simple names and straightforward branding that reflected its focus on quality and accessibility. Several of its beers earned recognition at regional beer competitions and helped establish the brewery as a respected member of Seattle’s craft beer community.
Beyond brewing, Optimism became known for its commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and charitable initiatives. The company regularly partnered with community organizations, hosted fundraising events, and supported causes that reflected its mission of bringing people together through hospitality and shared experiences. This people-first approach distinguished the brewery within an increasingly competitive craft beer market.
After nearly eight years of operating its Capitol Hill brewery and successfully navigating the challenges of the pandemic era, Optimism Brewing announced its closure in 2023. The brewery’s assets and taproom were acquired by Stoup Brewing, while the founders retained ownership of the building. Although the Optimism brand no longer exists, its influence on Seattle’s brewing culture, community engagement, and inclusive hospitality continues to be remembered throughout the Pacific Northwest craft beer industry.
