Carruth Cellars

Founded in 2006 by San Diego native Adam Carruth, Carruth Cellars is one of California’s most successful urban wineries and a pioneer of the “bringing grapes to the people” concept. After developing an interest in brewing and winemaking while attending college and later studying viticulture in Sonoma County, Carruth began making wine as a hobby with grapes transported from Northern California. What started as backyard winemaking in Carlsbad eventually evolved into a professional winery, leading to the establishment of Carruth Cellars in 2006.

Unlike traditional wineries located in major wine-growing regions, Carruth Cellars operates as an urban winery in San Diego County. The winery sources premium grapes from respected vineyards throughout Northern and Central California and Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Once harvested, the fruit is transported in temperature-controlled trucks to San Diego, where the entire winemaking process—including crushing, fermentation, aging, and bottling—is completed locally. This model allows wine enthusiasts in Southern California to experience the winemaking process without traveling to Napa or Sonoma.

A defining characteristic of Carruth Cellars is its commitment to community and accessibility. Rather than focusing solely on wine production, the winery has built a network of tasting rooms and gathering spaces throughout San Diego County, creating welcoming environments where locals and visitors can enjoy wine, live music, food, and social events. Over the years, the company has expanded from a single operation into multiple tasting room locations while maintaining its identity as a neighborhood-focused winery.

The winery produces a diverse portfolio of California-style wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and proprietary blends.
