El Molino Winery
⌖ 3315 St Helena Hwy, St Helena, CA 94574, USA
El Molino Winery
is one of Napa Valley’s oldest continuously recognized wine estates, celebrated for its rich history, family ownership, and dedication to producing exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Founded in 1871 by Colonel William Whittingham Lyman, El Molino was among the earliest wineries established in Napa Valley during the region’s formative years. The winery takes its name from the nearby historic Bale Grist Mill, known in Spanish as “El Molino,” meaning “the mill.” Situated in St. Helena, the property has witnessed more than 150 years of Napa Valley history, surviving major changes in the wine industry while preserving its original identity and commitment to small-scale winemaking.
A defining characteristic of El Molino Winery is its focus on limited-production Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Unlike many Napa Valley producers that center their portfolios on Cabernet Sauvignon, El Molino specializes in Burgundian varieties sourced primarily from the family-owned Star Vineyard on the Rutherford Bench. The winery follows traditional winemaking methods, utilizing a historic gravity-flow facility and hand-dug caves that provide ideal cellar conditions for aging wine. Annual production remains intentionally small, allowing meticulous attention to vineyard management, fermentation, and barrel aging. These practices have earned El Molino a reputation for crafting elegant, age-worthy wines that showcase balance, complexity, and a strong sense of place.
Beyond its wines, El Molino Winery is admired for preserving Napa Valley’s heritage. The winery operated until Prohibition and was later restored by the Oliver family after they acquired the property in 1978. Today, the family continues to oversee operations, maintaining a legacy that spans generations. Visitors and collectors are drawn to El Molino’s historic buildings, original winery label, and commitment to traditional craftsmanship. Through its combination of history, family stewardship, and exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, El Molino Winery remains one of Napa Valley’s most treasured and enduring boutique wine estates.
