Grimm Cellars
⌖ 1377 E Valley Rd. Santa Barbara, California 91308
Grimm Cellars
is a boutique winery built around a family-owned ranch in Santa Barbara County, California. The property was purchased in 2010 as vacant land with a water connection, storage container, and a few picnic tables. After exploring different possibilities for the ranch, the owners decided to move away from growing oat hay and pursue their shared passion for wine. They began planning a vineyard that would allow them to produce wines reflecting their own preferences and style.
The vineyard was planted in 2012 after soil testing helped identify the most suitable areas of the ranch for grape growing. Grimm Cellars worked with Coastal Vineyard Care as vineyard managers and Paul Lato as consulting winemaker, while biodynamic consultant Philippe Coderey became another important part of the winemaking team. This collaboration helped shape the property’s vineyard practices and commitment to biodynamic concepts.
The first harvest came in 2013 with Sauvignon Blanc, marking the beginning of the winery’s production. Grimm Cellars’ approach is centered on creating wines the owners themselves would be proud to drink, share with friends, and place their name behind. The intimate scale of the vineyard allows for careful attention to the land, grapes, and winemaking process.
With its family-owned ranch, biodynamic influence, carefully planned vineyard, and hands-on philosophy, Grimm Cellars offers a distinctive example of small-scale California winemaking. Its story reflects a personal transition from agricultural experimentation to a focused passion for producing handcrafted wine.
