Description

School House Vineyard

is one of Napa Valley’s most historic and distinctive family-owned wineries, known for its mountain-grown wines, old-vine heritage, and commitment to traditional winemaking. Established on a historic property purchased by the Gantner family in 1940, School House Vineyard has been producing wines since the 1950s and remains one of the few wineries in Napa Valley to focus primarily on Pinot Noir. The vineyard takes its name from a one-room schoolhouse built on the property in the 1880s, which stood for more than a century before being lost to a fire in the 1980s. School House Vineyard has become a cult favorite among wine enthusiasts who appreciate small-production wines crafted with restraint, balance, and authenticity.

At School House Vineyard, the focus is on estate-grown wines that express the unique character of the mountain vineyard. School House Vineyard is especially known for its Pinot Noir, produced from heritage cuttings believed to trace their origins to Burgundy. In addition to Pinot Noir, the winery crafts Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot, and Mescolanza, a field-blend wine inspired by historic mixed-black vineyards planted on the property in the late nineteenth century. The vineyard’s steep slopes, volcanic soils, and high-elevation location contribute to wines with remarkable structure, complexity, and aging potential. This dedication to site expression and traditional winemaking has helped School House Vineyard maintain a loyal following for decades.

Beyond its wines, School House Vineyard offers an intimate and highly personal visitor experience. School House Vineyard remains family-operated and has preserved much of its historic character while continuing to produce wines in limited quantities. Guests who visit can explore a property steeped in Napa Valley history and learn about generations of vineyard stewardship. Whether enjoying the acclaimed Pinot Noir, a mountain-grown Chardonnay, or the distinctive Mescolanza blend, visitors can experience the heritage, craftsmanship, and authenticity that continue to define School House Vineyard as one of Napa Valley’s hidden gems.
