Acacia Vineyard
is one of California’s pioneering wineries and is widely recognized for helping establish the Carneros region as a premier source of world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Founded in 1979 by Michael Richmond and Jerry Goldstein, Acacia emerged during a period when the Carneros appellation was still relatively unknown. Recognizing the area’s cool climate, maritime influences, and suitability for Burgundian grape varieties, the founders focused their efforts on producing elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that reflected the unique character of the region. Over time, Acacia became one of the wineries most closely associated with the rise of Carneros as a respected wine-growing area and earned a reputation as an early leader in vineyard-designated Pinot Noir production.
A defining characteristic of Acacia Vineyard was its dedication to cool-climate winemaking. Located on Las Amigas Road in the heart of Carneros, the winery specialized in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay sourced from both estate and carefully selected vineyard sites throughout the appellation. Acacia gained particular recognition for producing vineyard-designated Pinot Noirs, an approach that was innovative in California at the time and helped highlight the importance of terroir. The winery’s wines were known for their balance, finesse, and food-friendly style, distinguishing them from many of the richer, more heavily extracted wines popular during later decades. Over the years, Acacia expanded its portfolio while maintaining its focus on Burgundian varieties.
Beyond its wines, Acacia Vineyard played a significant role in shaping California’s modern wine industry. The winery changed ownership several times, including acquisitions by the Chalone Wine Group, Diageo, and later Treasury Wine Estates. Although the original winery property was eventually sold and the brand evolved under new ownership, Acacia’s influence on Carneros viticulture remains substantial. Its pioneering commitment to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay helped define the identity of the region and inspired countless producers who followed. Today, Acacia Vineyard is remembered as one of the foundational wineries that helped transform Carneros into one of California’s most respected cool-climate wine appellations.
