Lagier Meredith Vineyard

was one of Napa Valley’s most respected boutique wineries, celebrated for its pioneering work with Rhône and uncommon grape varieties on the rugged slopes of Mount Veeder. Founded by Dr. Carole Meredith, the renowned grape geneticist whose research helped uncover the origins of Zinfandel, and her husband Steve Lagier, a longtime winemaker at Robert Mondavi Winery, the vineyard grew from a personal hillside property into a highly influential small-production winery. The couple purchased their Mount Veeder property in 1986 and initially had no plans to establish a commercial vineyard. After years of developing the land, they planted their first Syrah vines in 1994 and released their inaugural wine in 1998.

Situated at approximately 1,300 feet above sea level, the vineyard benefits from volcanic soils, steep mountain terrain, and a cool climate that allows grapes to develop exceptional concentration and balance. Lagier Meredith became particularly known for its Syrah, which helped demonstrate the variety’s potential in Napa Valley mountain vineyards. Over time, the estate expanded to include other distinctive varieties such as Mondeuse Noire, Malbec, and Zinfandel. The winery’s philosophy centered on sustainable farming, low yields, hand-crafted production methods, and minimal intervention in both the vineyard and winery, allowing each wine to express the unique character of the site.

A defining feature of Lagier Meredith Vineyard was its commitment to authenticity and independence. The wines earned a devoted following among sommeliers, winemakers, and collectors who admired their balance, structure, and resistance to changing industry trends. Production remained intentionally small, and every aspect of the operation reflected the founders’ hands-on involvement and deep understanding of viticulture.

After more than two decades of winemaking, Steve Lagier and Carole Meredith retired from active production following the 2021 vintage. In 2022, stewardship of the vineyard transitioned to friends and fellow vintners Aaron and Claire Pott, ensuring the continued care of the historic Mount Veeder site while preserving its legacy.
