Trefethen Family Vineyards Trefethen Family Vineyards is one of Napa Valley’s most respected family-owned wineries, renowned for its estate-grown wines, historic winery property, and enduring commitment to quality. The winery traces its modern history to 1968 when Eugene and Katie Trefethen purchased the historic Eshcol property in Napa Valley and began restoring both the vineyards and the winery. Today, Trefethen remains one of the few major Napa Valley wineries that is still independently owned and operated by the founding family, with multiple generations actively involved in the business.

The estate is located in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley, a region known for its moderate climate and ability to produce balanced, elegant wines. Trefethen grows and vinifies all of its wines exclusively from estate vineyards, emphasizing a vineyard-to-bottle philosophy that allows each wine to express the unique character of the property. The winery produces a diverse portfolio that includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, and proprietary blends. Among its many achievements, the winery gained international recognition when its 1976 Chardonnay won top honors at the prestigious Wine Olympics competition, helping establish Napa Valley’s reputation on the world stage.

One of Trefethen’s defining features is its historic winery building, originally constructed in 1886 by noted winery architect Hamden McIntyre. The structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is recognized as one of Napa County’s few surviving nineteenth-century gravity-flow wineries. The Trefethen family has carefully preserved and restored the building, ensuring that it remains both a working winery and an important piece of Napa Valley history.
