Description

Uvaggio

Founded by acclaimed winemaker and entrepreneur Jim Fetzer, Uvaggio was a boutique Sonoma-based winery created to celebrate lesser-known and distinctive grape varieties from around the world. After helping build the success of the Fetzer family wine business, Jim Fetzer launched Uvaggio with a vision of introducing American wine consumers to unique varietals and wine styles that were rarely seen in California. The name “Uvaggio,” an Italian term referring to a blend of different grape varieties vinified together, reflected the winery’s focus on diversity, experimentation, and a global perspective on winemaking.

From its inception, Uvaggio sought to move beyond mainstream varietals by producing wines from grapes such as Barbera, Vermentino, Dolcetto, Montepulciano, and other Mediterranean varieties. Fetzer believed these grapes were well suited to California’s climate and could offer wine drinkers new experiences beyond the familiar Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay categories. By sourcing fruit from carefully selected vineyards throughout California, the winery was able to craft wines that balanced Old World inspiration with New World fruit expression.

A defining characteristic of Uvaggio was its educational approach to wine. The winery encouraged consumers to explore unfamiliar grape varieties and regional wine traditions while maintaining an approachable and enjoyable style. Rather than producing highly extracted or heavily manipulated wines, Uvaggio focused on balance, food-friendliness, and varietal authenticity. This philosophy helped the brand develop a loyal following among adventurous wine enthusiasts seeking alternatives to more conventional offerings.

The winery’s portfolio often featured wines inspired by Italy and other Mediterranean regions, reflecting Fetzer’s appreciation for wines that complemented food and emphasized freshness rather than power. Through small-lot production and thoughtful vineyard sourcing, Uvaggio demonstrated that lesser-known varietals could thrive in California and appeal to a growing audience interested in exploring the broader world of wine.

Today, Uvaggio is remembered as an innovative California wine brand that helped introduce consumers to unique grape varieties and international wine traditions. Through Jim Fetzer’s vision, the winery contributed to the diversification of California’s wine landscape and encouraged wine lovers to discover new flavors, regions, and styles beyond the mainstream.
