Wedell Cellars

is a boutique winery dedicated to producing small-lot Pinot Noir and Chardonnay inspired by the great wines of Burgundy. Founded by Maurice and Susan Wedell, the winery began as a dream in the late 1980s after Maurice developed a passion for fine French wines while working alongside a renowned French restaurateur. The family relocated to California’s Central Coast, planted an experimental Chardonnay vineyard in Edna Valley, and produced its first vintage in 1994—just one barrel yielding 28 cases of Chardonnay. This humble beginning laid the foundation for a winery focused on craftsmanship rather than large-scale production.

As the winery evolved, Wedell Cellars expanded its vineyard holdings and eventually began sourcing fruit from the acclaimed Sta. Rita Hills AVA, recognized as one of California’s premier Pinot Noir regions. The winery works with respected vineyards such as Fiddlestix and Sierra Madre, producing elegant Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Viognier. Every wine is crafted using traditional techniques including hand harvesting, small-lot fermentation, extended barrel aging, and minimal intervention to preserve the purity and complexity of the fruit.

Wedell Cellars has earned consistent praise from wine critics, with many releases receiving ratings of 90 points or higher for their balance, depth, and refined style. Remaining intentionally small in production, the winery continues to focus on quality over quantity while offering wines that showcase the exceptional vineyards of California’s Central Coast. Its commitment to artisan winemaking and Burgundian-inspired philosophy has made Wedell Cellars a respected name among Pinot Noir enthusiasts.
