The name “Adagio” is a musical term meaning to perform slowly and with passion, perfectly reflecting the owners’ thoughtful approach to vineyard development and winemaking.

Owners Dr. Tim and Dr. Jan Wahl bring different artistic and professional talents to the estate. Tim completed a winemaking certificate through the University of California, Davis, and is a member of the Guild of Sommeliers. Jan is a classical violinist and skilled violin maker who studied under respected German master Karl Roy. The tasting room celebrates both interests by presenting fine wines alongside handmade violins and insights into the instrument-making process.

Development of the vineyard began in 2006, with the first grapevines planted in 2009. Additional plantings followed, and the winery opened to visitors in May 2014. The rolling landscape provides attractive vineyard conditions, although cold winters, spring freezes, and excessive rainfall can create challenges. With its musical identity, knowledgeable owners, artisan atmosphere, and carefully cultivated wines, Adagio Vineyards provides a memorable destination for guests exploring North Carolina wine country.
