Caret Cellars

is a veteran family-owned and operated vineyard and winery offering handcrafted wines and relaxed countryside hospitality in Essex County. Conveniently located just off Route 17, the winery is approximately one hour northeast of Richmond, 40 miles southeast of Fredericksburg, and within easy reach of Virginia’s Tidewater region. Its peaceful rural atmosphere makes it an inviting destination for couples, friends, residents, and travelers exploring eastern Virginia.

Owners R.D. and Junghee Thompson purchased the vineyard property in 2006, planted their first grapevines in 2007, and completed the winery building in 2014. Their goal was to create a friendly gathering place where visitors could meet, enjoy wine, and spend an unhurried afternoon surrounded by the countryside.

R.D. grew up in the agricultural community of Walla Walla, Washington, before serving 25 years in the United States Air Force and later working as a government contractor. Together, the couple remains closely involved in cultivating healthy grapes, which they consider essential for producing quality wine. With veteran ownership, family dedication, carefully maintained vines, and genuine hospitality, Caret Cellars offers an authentic Virginia farm-winery experience.
