The winery was founded by Mark and Sue Rueger after Mark developed his winemaking skills through hands-on experience with a small winery in Amador County. What began as a hobby eventually grew into a full bonded winery, officially opening as Renegade Winery in 2012. The couple later purchased a historic building in downtown Mokelumne Hill and transformed it into their tasting room and gathering place.
