Upper Shirley Vineyards

offers an elegant waterfront wine experience along the banks of the James River in Charles City County. Located approximately 20 miles southeast of Richmond and 31 miles from Jamestown, the estate overlooks Turkey Island and the Presquile National Wildlife Refuge. River breezes, historic surroundings, and peaceful countryside views create an inviting destination for couples, friends, and travelers exploring Virginia’s Tidewater region.

Established in 2013, the winery manages approximately 16 acres of estate vineyards planted in the deep Pamunkey soils found near the river. European grape varieties were carefully selected to complement the property’s distinctive terroir. The vineyard includes Petit Verdot, Viognier, Merlot, and Tannat, providing the foundation for aromatic white wines and expressive reds.

Petit Verdot contributes spice, color, and firm tannins, while Viognier offers attractive peach and pear aromas. Merlot provides softer textures and approachable fruit, and Tannat produces deeply structured wines with impressive character. Guests can discover estate-grown selections while enjoying the scenic waterfront setting and learning how the surrounding soil and climate influence each vintage. With thoughtfully chosen grapes, beautiful river views, and genuine Virginia hospitality, Upper Shirley Vineyards provides a memorable wine-country experience.
