Hermann J Wiemer Vineyards

Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyards Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyards offers a distinguished Finger Lakes experience shaped by German heritage, pioneering viticulture, and a deep commitment to Riesling. Founder Hermann J. Wiemer was born in Bernkastel, Germany, where his mother’s family had produced wine in the Mosel Valley for more than three centuries. After moving to the Finger Lakes in the 1960s, he applied this knowledge to the region’s cool climate and helped establish its reputation for world-class Riesling.

His understanding of grafting European vinifera vines onto American rootstock played an important role in developing healthy vineyards and improving regional wine quality. Over time, the estate became known for elegant, precise wines that express the character of Seneca Lake, including Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir, and other carefully crafted selections.

In 2003, longtime apprentice Fred Merwarth assumed responsibility for winemaking and vineyard management. Hermann retired in 2007, and Fred partnered with Swedish agronomist Oskar Bynke to continue the winery’s legacy. Visitors can enjoy thoughtful tastings while learning about the estate’s history, vineyards, and winemaking philosophy. Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyards provides a memorable destination centered on heritage, craftsmanship, and authentic Finger Lakes character.
